The Mayor of Rugby

The Mayor of Rugby serves as the town’s First Citizen, providing civic and community leadership while helping to raise awareness of local businesses, charities and organisations.

The role is primarily ceremonial and carries no decision-making powers beyond those held as an elected councillor. The Mayor also presides over Full Council meetings which are livestreamed.

Cllr Nooria Sayani was elected Mayor of Rugby on 21 May 2026 at the Annual Meeting of Rugby Borough Council. She is the first Muslim woman to hold the office in Rugby. 

Her term of office will run until May 2027.

For her mayoral theme, Cllr Sayani will champion pluralism, aiming to build a fairer and more inclusive community grounded in three guiding principles: connection compassion and cohesion.
